NYFW Fall 2015: Charles Youssef's Tectonic

On Wednesday afternoon, I kicked off Fashion Week a bit early with a presentation of Charles Youssef's Fall 2015 collection. This is his third collection after launching his Resort 2015 line. Youssef was inspired this season by the artist David Batchelor's "Magic Hour" light installation and architect Tadao Ando's concrete staircase. These inspirations were seen throughout the collection through his use of zigzag appliques, smooth matte silk, sheer and cracks inspired by the earth's plate tectonics.

This collection was uniquely beautiful. I love the structure shoulders of his wool cashmere blend origami boucle top and black origami dress shirt. These strong structures remind me of a bold strong New York woman. The black sheer silk organza wrap dress and wool crepe dress with multi-layer silk organza layers helped give the collection a softer feminine feel. I could see taste makers (or myself) rocking the black sheer dress with wide brim hats and cowboy boots at concert halls and downtown bars.

NYFW Spring 2015: Luis Antonio's Maritime

 photo LuisAntonioSS15_zps08b574e7.png

Luis Antonio might not be new to the fashion seen but he is new to New York Fashion Week. Antonio has been designing in Puerto Rico for the past 20 years but made his New York Fashion Week debut under the tents last Saturday. His spring collection, which he named Maritime, was all about the nautical looks and effortless chic styles. He combined bold colors with bold patterns.

The first look down the runway had me going gaga. Look after look I was just so excited and interested in seeing more. This whole collection had this vacation/resort feel. I loved the abstract prints paired with the stripes. There was a sense of playfulness with in the collection with the use of prints, such as the abstract rope prints. It's hard to say what pieces were my favorites as I loved the jumpsuits and the abstract print gowns...but the long tulle skirt with the white shimmery top totally stole my heart...from the way it flowed and shimmered down the runway...SWOONS.

It's always important for a debut collection to make an impact and I really think this one made a statement. When asked which collections I've seen has been my favorite, this one is on my list.

NYFW Spring 2015: Georgine's Cabana Glam

After spending her days in bikinis off the coast of Thailand, designer Georgine Ratelband, delivered a cabana glam inspired Spring 2015 collection on Monday afternoon at Lincoln Center. The collection was inspired by 1970s glam which she used gold, rich cremes, and mints. She wanted a collection that can take a woman from beach to night but in a more luxurious way. These designs were paired with luxury accessories including mink towels and bags. Along with whimsical surfboard clutches in collaboration with Max Steiner Designs.

Georgine has quickly become a designer I look forward to seeing. Her debut collection last season (read here) was one of my favorites and this season is no different. I've always believed I was born on the wrong coast. I think I was made for the beach life and not so much the City. These looks were right up my ally, beach wear with a twist of glam. It was everything a woman who loves the beach and fashion needs. I loved everything from the clothes to the accessories (I need the NO DIVING mink towel...don't know what I would do with it but I need it) to the hair and make-up. The turbans were beautifully done and the make-up was a bronze goddess look. Her inspiration transported me from my seat in Lincoln Center to sitting in my private cabana on the beach being fabulous and drinking tropical drinks. This collection makes me long for my vacation in Hawaii thats coming up in November.

NYFW Spring 2015: August Getty MBFW Debut

Friday night designer August Getty made his first fashion week debut under the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tents. His Spring 2015 show was feminine and whimsy. Getty's collection was a perfect mix of girly, sexy, and fierceness. Pastel pinks and purples were mixed into this collection that was filled with black and white pieces. He drew inspiration from the flowers he would draw as a kid while at his family's botanical garden.

This collection was a great fashion week debut. His clothes moved well and had a sense of wonder. Remembrance is important when you are a starting designer and there were pieces in the collection that stood out, including the black and white dress with the oversized skirt. Which was one of my favorite pieces.

NYFW Spring 2015: Zimmermann's Tarot Card Dream

For Spring 2015 Nicky Zimmermann was inspired by a 1970's tarot card deck illustrated by David Palladini. The first dress in collection set the tone for the rest of the runway show. The powder blue dress flowed down the runway much like the rest of her collection. This spring was all about delicate laces, colors, tulles, and a touch of sparkle.

With just looking at the collection I would have never guessed that she was inspired by a tarot card deck. The vintage aspect was seen through out the collection, but once I learned about the tarot card inspiration I sort of saw it a tarot card reader in some of the pieces, like the off the shoulder white top with the pillowing gold pleated skirt. I truly loved the femininity in this collection. I adore the lace dresses as well as her sexy little bathing suits. Seriously though, I wish I could afford most of her collection. Not sure where I would wear some of it it but it sure is gorgeous!

NYFW: Jay Godfrey's Western Boho Chic Spring 2015

 photo JayGodfreySS15_zps0b5c7dd2.png

The Hub at the Hudson Hotel was transformed into a Coachella like atmosphere. Models were centered in the room standing on hey, while Idgy Dean in between the models wailed into the mic. Jay Godfrey set up this whole environment was not only welcoming but perfect for his western boho chic Spring 2015 collection. This collection was filled with beautiful fringe pieces and lots of western styled lace. This collection the perfect go to music festival collection.

I love that this collection had a 60's western twist to the boho look. My favorite two looks of course was the matching and leopard print blazer and pants as well as the long lace tunic top. Although I'm not sure how I felt about some of the hair. I would have gone with more hippie boho hair then some of the bigger 60s hair that was done.

Overall I found the collection wearable as well as relatable. There were pieces in there that were definitely meant to be taken to music festivals, while there were others that were perfect little cocktail dress numbers and pieces to be mix and matched.

NYFW Fall 2014: Georgine's To Be or Not to Be Moment

Georgine Ratelband debuted her namesake line Georgine under the tents at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week on a snowy Sunday night in Lincoln Center. Though this is her fourth collection this was her first notable showing of her line...and what a collection to debut! Ratelband's inspiration for the fall season was Shakespare's Hamlet, which couldn't be more fitting for a debut line as it was her "to be or not be" moment. This collection had a darker undertone much like the play itself. The Georgine woman is feminine yet edgy, which is my type of woman.

This was Ratelband's "to be moment" for sure.  As soon as I instagrammed my favorite look I knew it was going to be a hit (see here). I mean every badass chick needs a black fur coat, leather leggings, and cool ass shades. Another one of my favorite looks was the dark brown coat with the pink collar. The pink collar gives it a nice refreshing pop of color for fall, especially in New York when it's a sea of black coats. Her use of fur, leather, and tailored trousers are undeniably luxurious. Oh how I wanted to curl up in one of her fur coats. Honestly wanted to run out in the snow with the pink tipped sleeve fur coat. Even backstage I stood there for awhile just stroking it, thinking to myself "pet the fuzzy wall" (Get Him to the Greek...anyone?). Actually it does have a calming effect...maybe that's why everyone wears fur during fashion week? Anyway, I can  see Georgine's line appealing to woman of all ages from us style blogger who look a little edge to those woman who love classic style pieces i.e. fur coats, black dresses, and fur shawls.

NYFW Fall 2014: Saunder's Singing Detective Inspiration

Saunder's Fall 2014

by Tamara Walker of The Curvy Socialite

Despite Mother Nature’s relentless fury-- in the form of epic snowfalls and freezing temps that the Olympians in Sochi could only dream of-- New York played host to another installment of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. So with my big red coat (which my neighbor’s daughter has deemed the Samantha coat as it is reminiscent of the American Girls doll’s finery), and my oversized patent leather croc purse, I found myself headed to the fashion savvy neighborhood of Chelsea and the tres chic, High Line Hotel. The High Line Hotel, a former seminary turned boutique hotel, served as an impressive backdrop to the SAUNDER Fall/Winter 2014 Collection.
SAUNDER, a contemporary ready-to-wear line born of the creative mind of Manhattan-based designer, Emily Saunders, has been described as a reflection of her eclectic, worldly tastes. Each collection is infused with global style influences reflecting Saunders penchant for travel and her passion for the Big Apple.
This season, SAUNDER did not only draw inspiration from abroad but from the 80s BBC miniseries ‘The Singing Detective,’ the story of a pulp fiction novelist hospitalized for a chronic skin condition and who spends most of his time in a feverish dream state where he marries his fantasies about being a Noir detective with the reality of the memories of growing up in wartime Britain. The collection combines the femme fatale aesthetic of the film noir era with the palette and geometric patterns of the 1980s to create a beautiful collection ideal for the likes of the contemporary New York woman.  Collaborating with SAUNDER for the second time, native New Yorker, Megan Isaacs, created a capsule collection of ten necklaces that showcased the film noir feel through a pop art lens. For added flair, the hair and make-up evoked the wartime era with vintage hair styles featuring deep waves and simple yet sexy lips in vibrant reds, wines and plums.

The SAUNDER Fall/Winter Collection was definitely a favorite this season with its retro sophisticated feel.

Thanks to Tamara for treking through New York's crazy winter weather to make the Saunder's show for Fashionista NY Girl. This collection is so fun! I can totally see myself rocking the "baby doll" dress with the fur coat.

NYFW Fall 2014: Concept Korea

By Kimberlee Van Der Wall from I Have a Degree in This

I had the pleasure of attending the Concept Korea show where some of the top emerging designers from Korea come to show at New York Fashion Week. This season presented four designers: KAAEL E. SUKTAE, CHOIBOKO, Beyond Closet and BIG PARK. The clothes were very fresh and modern. There was also a lot of hip hop music, which brought a great energy to the shows. Here are my thoughts of each:

KAAL E.SUKTAE by LEE SUK TAE

My favorite collection of the group. It was downtown chic to the max. The designer says he was "inspired by 1990's fashion, the collection translates 'grunge' into modern and new structural silhouettes." The 90's grunge trend is still going strong in Fall 2014. I'm obsessed with the oversized brimmed hats (very American Horror Story looking).

CHOIBOKO

"One of the charms of being human is that our memories aren't like computers. Instead, memories become distorted over time. This collection, 'Fabricated Memory', portrays my reminiscences of the white coat has been transformed over time." It was definitely all about the coats and oversized graphic prints.

Beyond Closet by Ko Tae Yong

"I drew inspiration from my time in the army. The collection imagines a soldier on leave, blending military staples with more relaxed dressing." Another collection that was filled with amazing coats. The models walked down to hardcore rap, which gave the collection an edge. It was a relaxed runway with models showing some swag. I'd definitely want a man to dress in one of these chic looks.

BIG PARK by Park Youn Soo

My second favorite collection of the whole show because it had that punk sensibility to it with checkered patterns, leather bomber jackets and corn rows on the models. Park Youn Soo said he was inspired by "a romantic moment between two loved ones over dinner." There were also playful looks with pleated mini skirts and combat boots.

Note from the Editor

Thanks to Kimberlee from I Have a Degree in This for covering Concept Korea for me! I'm so loving KAAL E.SUKTAE by LEE SUK TAE  collection of wide brim hats. This whole collection has a bad ass girl feel. Since I have a slight obsession with coats I totally dig BIG PARK by Park Youn Soo  collection of coats. Oversized and motor jackets...yes please! These four designers have a refreshing feel. It's always fun to see up-and-coming designers, they usually have the most innovative ideas...which these four designers def. prove.

What do you think of this collection?
